The good news? The checklist is public. We know exactly what AI looks for.
Here are the 7 signals ChatGPT, Google AI, and Perplexity check before recommending a business, plus fixes for each one to help you rank higher and get found by AI.
The 7 AI Trust Signals
These are ranked by importance. Fix #1 first, then work your way down.
1️⃣ NAP Consistency
What AI checks: Is your business Name, Address, and Phone number exactly the same across Google, your website, Facebook, and directories?
Why it matters: If AI sees "O'Brien Plumbing" on your website and "O'Briens Plumbing Ltd" on Google, it thinks they're different businesses.
⚡ Quick Fix:
Pick one version of your NAP and copy/paste it everywhere exactly character for character. Use the exact format on Google Business Profile, website footer, Facebook About page, and every directory.
2️⃣ Google Business Profile Completeness
What AI checks: Have you filled out every field in your Google Business Profile — hours, services, description, categories, photos?
Why it matters: Google's AI heavily favors complete profiles. A 70% complete profile vs. 100% can be the difference between strong visibility and being overlooked.
⚡ Quick Fix:
Log into Google Business Profile. Click through every tab. Fill out every blank field. Add at least 10 high-quality photos. This gives massive ROI.
3️⃣ Recent Review Activity
What AI checks: When was your last review? Are you still getting new ones, or did they stop 2 years ago?
Why it matters: AI assumes recent reviews = active business. Old reviews can signal inactivity or declining relevance.
⚡ Quick Fix:
Ask happy customers for Google reviews. Send a follow-up email after service with a direct link. Aim for 1-2 new reviews per month minimum.
4️⃣ Clear Service Descriptions
What AI checks: Can it clearly tell what you do, who you serve, and what makes you different?
Why it matters: Vague = skipped. "We provide quality services" tells AI nothing. "24/7 emergency plumbing in Dublin 1, 2, 4" tells AI exactly when to recommend you.
⚡ Quick Fix:
Rewrite your homepage and Google Business description. Use this format: "[Service] for [Who] in [Where]. We specialize in [What makes you different]."
5️⃣ Local Relevance Signals
What AI checks: Are you actually embedded in the local area? Do you mention Dublin, Cork, or Galway on your site and social media?
Why it matters: AI needs proof you serve a specific area. Generic websites don't get recommended for "near me" searches.
⚡ Quick Fix:
Add a "Service Areas" page to your website. List every Dublin postal code or Cork neighborhood you serve. Use actual place names, not just "Ireland."
6️⃣ Citation Quality
What AI checks: Is your business listed on trusted Irish directories like GoldenPages, LocalPages, Yelp, and industry-specific sites?
Why it matters: AI cross-references multiple sources. The more places your NAP appears (consistently), the more confident AI is that you're legitimate.
⚡ Quick Fix:
Claim your listings on GoldenPages.ie, LocalPages.ie, and Yelp. Then search "[your industry] Ireland directory" and claim 3-5 more. Use the exact same NAP.
7️⃣ Website Trustworthiness
What AI checks: Does your site have HTTPS security? Contact information? A real address? Privacy policy?
Why it matters: AI won't recommend sketchy-looking sites. If your website screams "2005 template" or has no SSL certificate, you're far less likely to be recommended.
⚡ Quick Fix:
Ensure your site has HTTPS (padlock in browser). Add a footer with contact info, physical address, and email. If your site is ancient, budget for a refresh in 2025.
The Pattern You Need to See
All 7 signals have one thing in common:
Clarity, consistency, and recent activity.
AI doesn't reward cleverness. It rewards businesses that make it easy to understand who you are, what you do, where you operate, and that you're still active.
